Goal: To design a compelling Public Service Announcement (PSA) that encourages pet adoption by highlighting the emotional bond between humans and animals.
My Role: Lead Visual Designer. I was responsible for the creative direction, asset sourcing, and technical execution of the final advertisement.
The Challenge: The primary hurdle was finding the perfect visual balance. I needed high-quality imagery that could “hook” a viewer instantly without relying on the common industry trope of “guilt-tripping.” The goal was to inspire compassion and action through joy and connection rather than sadness.
Research & Strategy: I began by selecting a specific organization to anchor the project’s voice: Second Chance Animal Services (Worcester, MA). Having adopted my own dog from this rescue, I had a personal understanding of their community impact.
- Organizational Analysis: I researched their mission and values to ensure the ad felt authentic to their brand.
- Visual Psychology: I focused on “the emotional hook”—selecting images of cats, dogs, and small animals that appeared approachable and “waiting for a friend,” paired with text that invites the reader into the story.
Execution & Results: The final design uses a strategic visual hierarchy: a “hero” image of a kitten/puppy to grab immediate attention, followed by a clear call-to-action.
- Technical Workflow: I utilized Adobe Photoshop to create a seamless composition.
- Techniques: I employed advanced masking and blending to unify disparate images. I also performed detailed color grading—adjusting levels, saturation, and sharpness—to give the piece a vibrant, professional, and polished feel.
The result is a warm, inviting PSA that highlights the beauty of adoption and directs the community toward a local cause.
